3. Coma-ruga and its Belle Époque

The Bellamar enterprise had been founded by Eusebi Rodon and Joan Socias, both from Barcelona. Their intention was to create a large joint-stock company of properties which would include villas lined by sumptuous avenues with a large and majestic hotel at the centre.

One of the most lavish projects involved reforming the hotel Gran Hotel Balneari Oriental Miramar. It was converted into a luxurious spa, renamed the Comarruga Terrasse Hotel and inaugurated in 1920. The hotel held balls and parties, and other entertainment during the summer, including events like the “fashionable Thursdays”. Another Bellamar project involved defining the boundaries of the Coma-ruga lake.

Did you know that…?

The spa Balneari Commarruga building was in fact the first Vila Ramona to be built in Coma-ruga, and Bonaventura Trillas’ daughter had lived there until the property was acquired by the Bellamar enterprise. For this reason, a second Villa Ramona was later built, located on the current Passeig Marítim (Seafront Promenade).
